Jakob der Lügner

1. Many people are taught when they are young that lying is wrong. Do you believe there are times in life when it is permissible to lie? Why or why not? Give examples to support your position. (70 words)

2. Do you believe Jakob was justified when he lied about having a radio? Was it permissible in this situation? Explain why or why not and discuss the consequences (whether good or bad) of his lie. You should also consider the possible ramifications of not lying. What would you have done in the same situation? (70 words)

3. Clouds are used as a metaphor throughout the movie. Think of the story Jakob told about the sick princess and the young gardener. What do you think the cloud represents? Who are the sick princess and the young gardener boy? Write your thoughts about what each could possibly symbolize.

In the movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lied that he had a radio. You brought up the question that is it okay to lie sometimes. I think that it is okay in certain situations. Say someone was dying, I think that at that time it is okay to lie to them and say that they will live. I also think that it is okay if the lie will protect more people than hurt. So I think that lying is okay in certain situations.

The next question you asked was if Jacob was justified in his lying about the radio. I really don't think that it was a great idea and I think that it wasn't justified. Mostly because it killed his friend and put him in a lot of stress. But more people probably would have died if he hadn't told the lie. If I were in his situation, I probably wouldn't do anything.

The last question your asked was what we thought the clouds represented. I think that they represented freedom from the ghetto and Germans. And I also think that the princess represented the getto, or was the little girl that Jacob took care of. I also think that the gardener represented Jacob. So that is what I think about the 3 questions you asked us.

1. I believe that there are some occasions in which lying is acceptable, but I don't think that there is a clear cut line on when we should lie and when we shouldn't. Sometimes the fate of many people depends on whether we lie or not, but we should be very careful to consider the consequences before we do lie. For example, sometimes it is necessary to lie during a war, but the consequences could be terrible.

2. I really can't say very well whether or not Jakob was justified to lie. Like he said, there was a sharp decrease in the number of suicides in the ghetto, so there were a few positive consequences. There were also bad consequences, such as it causing the suicide of his friend and possibly speeding up their deportation. I think that Jakob did make the best decision in his mind, but I don't think I would have done the same thing to begin with.

3. I think the cloud represents the happiness that is unknown to the little girl. It represents hopes and dreams, things that others may think we cannot reach. They comfort us when we are "sick" or sad. The sick princess represents each of us, and the gardener boy represents our heroes; those who comfort us and help us realize our dreams. It is only our heroes who can give us our "clouds", the things we seek.

When your little, your parents teach you that lying is wrong and that you should never do it. In some cases you have to. For example, your friend is about to die, so to stop them you lie. Jacob had to lie to save his friend's life. You should never lie unless you are in a certain situation. Jacob did the right thing. But it might lead to more lying.

In this situation Jacob lied and said that he owned a radio to save his friend's life. By lying, he has to tell more lies to make sense. For example, he told other people about the radio. That lead to people wanting to know more news. But he has to make up the news so that people won't question him about it. I would have lied to save my friends to.

I think that the sick princess represents the little girl that Jacob is taking care of. I think that the gardener represents Jabob. The Jews want to live in a safer place. I think that the clouds represent the safer place.

When I was young my parents taught me not to lie and to always tell the truth. You asked that in certain situations that it was okay to lie. I think that in certain situations that it is okay to lie. Like if some girl asked you if this dress makes her look big, and if it does make her look big then you just say that it doesn't because you don't want to hurt her feelings, or if someone makes food for you and asks how it tastes, and then it tastes like crap then you just say that it tastes great because they cooked for you and you don't want to hurt there feelings.

I don't really know if Jakob was justified when he lied about the radio or not. Because it ended up that all of the people hated him and then it caused the death of his friend. Then it caused them to be deported to a different place which probably ended up killing almost all of them, but on the other hand a lot of the people stopped killing themselves because they started getting hope that the Russians were coming. So I don't think that I would have done the same thing in that situation.

What I think that the clouds represented was hope, like hope for the Russians coming. What I think that the princess represented was the Ghetto and how they kept on giving up hope that they were not going to survive and that they were all going to die in that one place. I think that the gardener represented the little girl and how she never gave up and how she was always expecting good things that were going to come.

I believe that in certain conditions it is all right to lie. Like, if you have to lie when somebody is putting a gun in your face, or threatening someone you love, and you have to lie to save someone. So, in life or death situations then it is okay. Or if someone ask if they are pretty, then no matter what, you should say yes. Because everyone is pretty to some certain degree.

I think he was justified when he lied about the radio. But it seemed like it just went out of control. It did seem permissible in that situation where he was trying to save his friend. But then the same thing that saved his one friend killed his best friend. But when you think of it on a whole situation then it did help with not having as many suicides. I would probably do the same thing, but then tell them the truth afterwards.

In the story of the cloud and the gardener. I think the cloud represents the War. And the sick princess is the people who are suffering in the War. And the gardener is a savior. Because, in the story no one can capture a cloud and trap it. But that was what the people (or sick princess) wanted. I think that he thought the War was hopeless and they should just give in. But then the gardener pretty much tricks the princess into believing that they are OK. And that is what he does with the radio, he tricked the people into believing that they were fine.

In the Movie Jakob Der Lugner, jacob lied to his friend that he had a radio. He lied to his friend, so that he would not be shot as he tried to escape. His lie brought Misha hope, and not to despair. I think that lying is always wrong, that you should always tell the truth. In Jakob's circumstance, however it is still wrong. Yes, he saved lives by giving people hope, but by lying. lying is always wrong.

Number 2
I think that jacob was not justified about lying about his radio. He did save some lives, but lots of others were destroyed by the realization that there was no radio. many of them had false hopes that were let down, which I think is worse than having no hopes at all. Jakob's best friend committed suicide when he learned that there was no radio. If he hadn't lied, his friend would not have committed suicide, many others lives could have been saved.

What do the clouds represent? I think that the clouds in the story represented something just out of reach, such as freedom. the clouds in the story were made of cotton balls, which I think represents a child's capacity for dreaming, and imagination. The fact that the princess needed a cloud to get better, i think that means the girl needs freedom. i hope that answered your Q's, Dean. Tchuss!
All you people that didn't do this, and get a bad grade, shame on you!

IT will never be ok to lie. For me in any reason its not ok. you give people false hope and when they find the truth there will be an emptiness inside them. They would feel let down and betrayed. They would think if that the only reason they were living for they could give up like Jakob's friend the barber who killed himself. Even if the lie is to save someone it will hurt another. If that happens do you think it was really that worth it. And in the worst of times its never the slightest bit ok to lie and it would cause more tension then there already is.

well i wouldn't lie to get out of it but to save my friend i would take his fault most likely. like when Mischa almost ran for the potatoes i would say something like "i told him they were there" or " i told him to get them for me." but in any case i would do what i could to get around lying and a big life that puts peoples lives on the line.

what the cloud represents. i thought it was like the train but not bringing them to a camp but maybe home or some form of hope other than the radio. Jakob talks about how kids think the cloud is made of cotton balls but its not. maybe that the lie of his radio. the sick princess represents the Jews in the ghetto with no way out. the once happy people who were beat and tortured for no reason. And last i thing the gardener is like the Russians or someone who lead them to the train or cloud to find home and peace and live together happily.

1. I think that it is okay to lie in certain situations. Maybe someone tells you not to tell anyone about their personal problems. So if someone came up to you asking what was wrong with them, would you tell them? I would not tell them. In other situations I think that it is okay to lie. What if you stole something and the owner was looking for it? You should tell the truth and tell that person that it was you who took it. That is my opinion on that topic.

2. The next question you asked was if Jacob was Justified with the lying he did in the movie. I think that he was justified. Because when he lied to his friend, his friend was about to run to the box car that they were not supposed to go to and possibly get shot down. The lie about the radio stopped him from running out into the open. When he lied to lina, he said that they were going on a vacation when they were really going to a concentration camp. I think it would not be the right thing to do to tell her that they were both about to die.

3. The last question you asked was what the clouds represented. I think that the clouds represented freedom from the ghetto. The princess was sick because she could not get out of the ghetto into the world. Freedom was the only thing that could cure that sickness.

1. I think that lying is wrong in a normal situation, but if someone's life is on the line, one could lie to save their life. Like in the movie, Jakob lied and they said a lot less people were committing suicide. Jakob lied, and less people died (at the time). The only problem with this is, that he had to keep the lie up or else the people would commit suicide.
2. I think that when Jakob lied and said that he had a radio, it was justified, because no one would believe him that the Russians were coming (or trying to get there, anyway). He lied so that people would believe the important truth. The consequences of this lie would be that he would have to keep the lie up for people to still believe him, and because of tv, we all know what situations that leads to. Troubling situations. In the same situation, I would have lied, but instead of showing the girl the radio, I would have tried to avoid people and the radio, so that no one would get to close to finding out that I didn't have one.
3. I think the cloud could represent freedom. Because, you see, the sick princess was representing the little girl. She was sick during the movie, and in the story. A young gardener came along, and gave her a cloud, if the cloud represents freedom, then she's free from the ghettos, and she's happy. The two people getting married might represent the happy ending from getting away from the ghettos (well, it was happy that they were leaving, in the little girl's point of view). But, the young gardener, I think he looked like that one guy that was with his girlfriend during the movie, but I'm not sure who or what he would represent.

In the movie jokob the liar he had to secretally lie about having a radio and I do beleieve in that situation after he has already lied once it was ok but i think he shouldnt have lied in the first place with the first lie. So the answer to this question would have to be that yes their is times in life where it is ok to lie but that time does not come around very often because you should only lie when you have gotten yourself in a deep hole and you cant dig yourself out so you have to lie of when you have to lie to protect someone else.
Do i beleive that Jakob was justified lying? Yes i do after he had already lied first because he had to dig himself out of a hole that he could not do without lying about it. It was also permissible in that situation because if he told the truth everyone would hate him and Jakob could of gotten hurt if he would have told the truth. In this situation i would have not told the lie in the firdt place so i wouldnt have to keep lying to dig me out of a hole and just tell the truth.
And the last question what i thought the cloud represented? i thought is represented freedom from the germans and their so called "ghetto". I also think that the princess repersented the little girl he was taking care of. I think the gardner represented Jakob.

I was taught not to lie, or you have consequences, and bad stuff like that, and I think it is NEVER ok to lie, in any kind of situation....NEVER!!! I am a really bad liar, so that is probably why I think like this. But still, I don't like it when people lie to me about things. I was once in a situation where one of my friends had to use money, and they asked me, and told me the next day, and the next day, and the next day, that they'd pay me back, and they never did. Now that made me mad.

Next, do I believe Jakob was justified when he lied about having a radio? I, personally, didn't think Jakob really had a radio, wether he did or not, it's kind of hard to believe that someone like that, would have a luxury like a radio. I wasn't very convinced with what Jakob was saying, because when they asked him for news, he just said "I'll tell you when I want to tell you," and, it's common sense, you can tell he has only heard that bit of info on how the Russians were by that Bozanika, blah, blah blah place at the police station he entered for being caught for being out after "curfew". If I was his friend, and I didn't know he was lying in the first place, I would be fully hooked on the idea that he had a radio. Seriously, I wouldn't. For lying, he would probably end up being burned or something for supposedly saying he had a radio, and lying and stuff like that. If I was Jakob, I wouldn't have lied in the first place, I mean, they're lives were probably and most likely on their shoulders every day already, so LYING about possessing a RADIO is the worst possible way to put your life in even MORE jeopardy.

To me, the cloud represents (it sounds stupid) but I think it means death, a little bit, and heaven, as well, and the sick princess can't get better, unless she has a cloud the size of her pillow, and let's face it, honey, you can't literally catch a cloud the exact size of her pillow, and so she would die, and go to heaven, maybe. I think the sick princess is maybe supposed to be either Rosa, Lina, or "Onkel" Jakob's former wife (I don't know her name), and the young gardener boy? Maybe either Mischa or Jakob. I really have no idea, but that's what I think if I could. At first, I though the sick princess was really at first Lina, and the young gardener boy Mischa, because those were the two people that portrayed them in the story, and then I found out in the end that the sick princess and the gardener boy got married! Right then, I thought "Whoa, wait, a little 9, 10 year old GIRL cannot, absolutely CANNOT, marry a 19, or 20 year old MAN! That, would be creepy! So, I though it was ROSA and Mischa, but I though it was Lina at first.

although some people say that they think lying is okay in my opinion its never okay. lying never gets you anywhere. all you get is more lies covering that one. every lie starts with a little peace of truth but it still helps no one for an example Jakob lyes to one person and all it does is travel from person to person. soon every one is wondering about it and he has to make up more lies to cover it up.
so i don't think you should ever lie.

honestly i don't think it was justified. all it did was kill the barber guy. although it helped the younger guy it was not the best idea it stressed out to many people. if he didn't lie someone would have died. but because he did lie someone died so ether way someone would have died. in this situation i would have avoided it and stop the lies before they got to big. and hopefully no one will be hurt.

my opinion of what the clouds represent hope and freedom. in the story of the sick princes the only thing that can heal the princes is a cloud. i think that the young boy represents the Russians because the Russians bring hope to the Jews and the Russians will com and free the Jews. i also think that the princes represent the Jews. the princes is trapped by the sickness and the Jews are trapped by the Germans and the Russians are there only hope. that is what i think the story represents.

I think that you are some times allowed to lie. like in the Jakob der Lunger movie, if he did not lie when he was eves dropping then they would have killed him. Just because his coat was stuck and he could not get it out. They thought that he was eves dropping. It is also bad to lie like when he saved his friend from getting his self killed so he told him that he had a radio. Then he said do not tell anyone. Then his friend told the whole ghetto. Then everyone knew and wanted to know every day.

I think that he was not justified. NO it is most certainly was not. Because if the green police found out that he had or thought that he had a radio then he would be killed or punished. If I had to save a friend by telling a lie then I would. Then when we where walking home then I would tell him the truth. For example if I told my friend that I pirated but it was a lie after that when we where leaving then I would tell him the truth.

I think that the cloud represents the lie that Jakob told. I think that the sick princess is the little girl that he is taking care of. I think the gardener is friend that he saved.

1. The movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lies that he has a radio and gives false info. out to people. I think that it is okay sometimes to lie. If someone ask you if they are ugly and they really are then you probably want to lie in that situation. But, other than that you shouldn't lie. What is the point of getting everyones hopes up when you know that it's a big lie.

2. Jacob kind of has a point in lying. Maybe Jacob just wanted to see the people around him happy. Other than that there is no reason to get everyones hopes up. You would not be able to trust the person that made up a lie. You would be untrusted by all of your friends. He should not have lied because after he did it once then he keeps lying to cover up his first lie

3. The cloud represented freedom from the Nazi's and freedom from the ghettos. The young gardner represented the Russians saving the Jews. The girl represented a Jewish girl who has no freedom. The garderner also represented Jacob to me and the sick girl was also the girl Lina.

P.S. i wasn't there the day we started the movie

1. I think that lying is bad, but with the expecption of your friends. Only if you are joking around. I also think that if you do lie, you better fess up or more lies will follow, example of jakob. He wouldn't have been in such a tight spot if he had told the truth. If you are caught in the lie and fess up, you better be ready for a punishment that you earned, you definitly wont get away with the lie, somebody will find out sooner then later.

2. I do not think that Jakob was ok to lie to everyone in the ghetto. It mightive been ok for the first time, but he had to tell the truth sooner or later. He just gave everyone hope that was then taken away from the germans. His lie was not justified for the situation. (54) If he had not of lied about the radio, people would start to ask questions about the war. So it mightive been a good decision to lie to give them hope.

3. I think that the clouds are used as a metaphor, I think they represent the hope the jews had, they never did get it, but it was close. The sick princess I think represents the ghetto and the gardener represents the radio. They thought that they could replace the clouds as cotton balls, but that "hope" was taken away and could not be replaced. I think that this movie can show a great life lesson of life.

It is okay to lie sometimes. If you are lying so that you and only you get gain then you are just selfishly lying and that’s not okay. If you lie to save somebody’s life or something important like unto saving someone’s life then I think it would be a justified lie. So sometimes it is okay to lie if and only if you are lying for the right reasons.

Jacob should have never lied about having a radio. It was good to have everybody happy, but in the end everybody was a little sadder than before because they got their hopes up just to get it quickly beat back down when he told them the radio was fake. It would be okay if he told them the news from the radio that he actually heard and the newspaper news.

In the princess story I think the clouds stood for freedom. The princess stood for the people in the ghettos. I think the gardener stood for the Russians. That would work out because the Russians (gardener) were bringing freedom (cloud) to the people in the ghettos (princess).

I was tought not to lie when I was little but I think that there are times when it is ok to lie. I think that lying when somebody asks you if you did something or if you took something, it isn't ok. I think it is also not ok to lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes I think it is ok to lie. If someone asks you what you think of the food they made, you don't them its gross even though its true, you tell them its good. It is ok to lie sometimes if it is going to help sombody for a good cause, not to get them out of trouble though.

I think that Jacob was justified when he lied about having a radio. It saved the guys life. If Jacob hadn't lied and given the guy hope, that guy would've been dead and they would have moved on. There were a bunch of consequences of Jacob telling him that he had a radio. Everybody found out and then they all were asking Jacob for more news and to see the radio. It put Jacob's life in danger. If it was me, I probably wouldn't say about a radio, but I might lie about something else. I would want to save the guys life too even if had to make something up.

There are several things that the story could represent but this is what I think it means. I think that the girl represents the people in the ghetto because they can't do much and many of them are sick. I think the clouds symbolize the end of the war or freedom and how nice it will be. I think that the gardener represents the people that will help them be free and to end the war. I think that he mostly represents the Russians but he represents other nations that are fighting the Germans too.

you asked if we thought it was right to lie at all and i say no, it is never right to tell a lie to anyone no matter what.in the movie Jacob the liar he told his friend that he had a radio when he did not so he would not kill himself. i think he should have been honest to him and not lied because when you tell a lie the truth will always find its way out and do more damage than it would if he were honest to everyone.in the end the people were mad at Jacob for his lie about the radio and another one of his friends killed himself when he herd it was a lie, in the end it is never worth it to lie.

was Jacob justified in his lie about the radio?what do you mean by justified? i think he thought he was doing the right thing with the lie about the radio do i think giving people false hope is right thing to do even in the case of Jacob and his friend no,i think people will do what they will with the truth and there is nothing you can do about it. if someone is going to kill them self because of the truth holding it back will only give you so much time before they get the truth.

what do i think the clouds represent?i think it could be a lot of things but what i got at first was when people are controlled and are in the condition the the Jews were kept in during world war 2 and that time they become sick, not the sick like you have to go to the doctor sick, a sick that the only way you can get better is to have freedom and be able to do the things you like and want to do, i think the clouds were symbolizing freedom to the Jews at that time. how they could see them but never reach them and that was all they needed to be okay and not be sick any more

1. well i think that it is sometimes okay to lie. i think that there are certain times that you can lie like if it will help someone to feel better about themselves or if it will make someone happier or something like that then i think that it is okay to lie but if you lie just to benefit you then i don't think that its okay to lie to others.

2. i think that Jacob was justified in telling that lie because his friend that he first told the lie to was just about going to steal something and by doing that then he would have gotten shot and died and so the only way to save him from doing that and getting killed was to tell that lie and since he wouldn't believe the true he had to tell a lie to save him.

3. well i think that the clouds represent freedom and yah and thats what it is in the story to.

#1-I believe that there are sometimes that you can lie. When people are discouraged about something your not gonna say something that makes them more discouraged. Just like the Geico commercial when Abe lincoln's wife asks if the dress makes her big, your not really going to say yes if it does, your going to lie so it makes them feel better. So in my opinion I believe that it is okay to lie sometimes.

#2-I believe that he was not justified when he said he had a radio because in that situation, everyone would believe it and it would give them false hope. It was not permissible in this situation. Because this was the early part of the war his lie was very bad because everyone believed him and brought way to much attention to himself which caused the whole ghetto to be under tremendous danger. Even though without telling the guy, that was going to steal potatoes, he should have stopped him and told him his honest opinion and what would happen to him if he tried to steal them. I would have told him my honest opinion and what would have happened to him.

#3-I think the clouds in the story represent hope and faith. The girl in the story wanted a cloud because she wanted to get better and believed that the cloud would help her. The sick princess is the ghetto and the gardener is the Russians and other helpers

#1 I think that it is always wrong to lie but I think that maybe Jacob was justified because he was saving peoples lives, like he said since people had started hearing "news" the suicides had almost completely stopped. Besides he saved the boy who was going to steal the apples by lying and telling him he had a radio.
So I think that he made a choice that was right, at least I know I would have done it.

Sometimes it is okay to lie. but only if you dont hurt anyone in the process. like if its a small little white lie of a fibblet! maybe there is a time that you need to lie about a gift or to hide something that will be good for that person in the long run. But of you get in the bad habbit of lying, it WILL come back to haunt you! so watch out! Anyway, weather you should lie or not definetly depends on the situation!

in this movie, Jakob was a dirty liar. but in this specific situation, i think it was okay to tell a fib. If he had not done this, then his little girl would not be amused. Also, the guy that almost stole the potatoes, would have died. Jacob could have died too! Many, many more people would have died on top of that. When people heard Jakob's fake news, the suicides almost completely stopped.

I think that it is okay to lie if some one will die unless you lie. if Jakob hadn't lied then he would have to live with the fact that his friend died becaus he didnt belive Jakob. Then again some times its bad to lie also. if you just lie becaus you don't want to get in trouble, then thats not good enough of a reson to lie. Only lie if you have a good reason.

When Jakob lied the first time, he had to lie other times to keep his friends from finding out, and when he told his best friend that he didn't have a radio, his best friend commited suicide! i think he should have told every one he wouldnt use the radio any more becaus the nazis almost caught him. but im not Jakob.

i think the cloud represented the radio. in the story, the gardener tricked the princess to think that the cotten balls were a cloud. and in the movie, Jakob tricked his fake daughter to think that his voice was the radio.

#1-In the movie jakob has to lye to save his friend from being shot so i think in some cases it is ok to lye, if it is for saving his friend or to protect some one you know. But there are some cases that i also think where lying is bad and sometimes dumb to do like lying about doing something you didn't do or stuff like that. So i think it is ok some times.

#2-I think he was justified when he lied about it because when he was lying to his friend about it, he would have run out and got himself shot by the guards and lying was the only way he could save him, So I think it was permissible because not only did it save his friend but it gave the rest of the people in the ghetto hope when they didn't have any. I would have done the same thing.

#3-In the story the princess was sick and she needed a cloud. clouds are free and can go any where i think the cloud was a metaphor for being free in a better place. The princess i think was the jews who needed a "cloud" to get to a better place and the gardner boy was the people who they thought were going to save them.

So this is pretty much a short essay? Ok.

When I was younger, I was taught that lying is wrong. Of course little lies do appear like, "No I did not steal the cookies from the cookie jar" and such, but when you grow older, the gravity of lying is a bit different. How is it different? Because now you're not lying about some stupid cookie jar, now you're lying about bigger things that affect people. In my opinion I do believe that it is appropriate to lie if you are trying to protect your friend's feelings or if it is a life or death situation.
(97 words)

I do agree that Jakob was right when he lied to his friend. He gave his friend hope. But I don't agree with how he kept spinning the web of lies and kept lying. He should've admitted it a few days later, the boy wouldn't try suicide again because he just asked to marry someone. Then again, if Jakob hadn't lied Mishe(I think that's his name) would have done it again, and suicides would continue and that ghetto would still be hopeless. If I were in this situation and that was Alicia ( I doubt she'd do that though ) I don't think I would have lied to her, I probably would've dragged her back to the "apartments" and try to talk sense into her. But if lying was absolutely the only way, I would do it because I wouldn't want her to die.
(131 words)

As you know, I thought about this one for a while and I have come to the conclusion that the princess represents the Jewish people (and all the others that were the victims of the haulocast). The illness that the princess is faced with is pretty much the Nazis and Hitler, The gardner boy symbolizes the Russians and the Americans that were fighting to free the jews. Oh yes, and the cloud represents freedom. (There are actually a lot of ways that the cloud could be interpreted but I liked this way best.)

1. Me personally in Jakob's case it was ok to lie. We are all taught not to lie, but when one of your friends are about to die what else do you do? You can not just keep on going and act like nothing happened. You have to step up and try to save them. It is only ok to lie in some cases, but not in all. For example, if you tell a lie then that lie just builds on that one, and pretty soon everyone knows that you lied, and it becomes really hard to build back up that trust.

2.I don't think that he was justified for lying about the radio. There was other ways that he could have helped Mesha out. Also it ended up leading to killing his best friend. It caused a ton of pain for him, and for all the people that he lied to. I also think that it was really hard for Jakob, because he had to keep up with the lies that he told. He hurt everyone around him, the ones he loved, and he even hurt himself. I would have brought up Rosa, and how much she loved him. I would have keep on talking about her until he finally came through.

3.Me personally I think that the cloud represents hope, and the freedom that they could eventually have. I think that the princess was the Jews, and the gardener was the Russians. The Jews had to keep on hoping that the Russians would come and free them.

#1-In the movie jakob lied to save hi friend

Unknown said...

#1- I have been taught that it is never ok to lie. In some situations I think it is ok to lie. it depends on what you are lying about, why you are lying, and who you are lying to. If you tell your friend a little "white lie" about how she looks it's alright. If you tell someone a lie about something life changing or life threatening, it will definitely matter in the long run. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you think lying is the right thing to do, do it and deal with the consequences(good or bad).

#2- Do I think Jakob was justified about lying about the radio? Yes, I think he was. He did it out of concern for Mischa, and someone was going to die one way or another. It gave many people hope or I think lots of other people would have ended up dead. Granted, lots of people ended up dead anyway, but this way it wasn't suicide. I think if I were ever in a similar situation for any reason, I would say anything to save that person's life. There is NOTHING more important than life.

#3- I think the sick princess is the caged(for lack of a better word) Jews, the Cloud represents the freedom the Jews keep hoping for, and the young gardener is the Russians who the Jews are relying on to bring them freedom.

1. I think that there are some times in life when it is ok to lie. for example if I was caught doing something wrong i would probably lie about it. In jacab the liar, jacob lied about haveing a radio and him knowing the positions of the russians. I think that this was not the appropriate time to lie for jacob, because in the end of the movie jocobs lie ended up making him go to a concentration camp.

2. I already said in my first paragraph that jacob was not justified with telling the lie of him having a radio. It was not permissible because it was in a dangerous situation and he could have been killed for having a radio. I think that if I were in that situation I would have just told the truth and said that i heard that the russians were close from the radio inside of the police station. If jacob would have told the truth everything might have been okay for jacob and the rest of the ghetto.

3. I think that in the movie the clouds symbolize all of the lies that jacob tells. I think that the sick princess symbolizes everybody in the ghetto and the the gardener represents the russians. Each time jacob tells a lie a cotton ball is added to the cloud. The people in the ghetto are helpless and hopeless. and the people in the ghetto are waiting on the russians just like the sick princess is waiting for the gardener.

I think that in certain conditions it is okay to lie like, if it is a life or death situation and someone is pointing a gun at you or someone is trying to kill your friend or they are doing something that will get them killed then i think that it is okay but i do think that you should always try not to lie like, if some one asks you if they look good but they really don't you do not have to say, "You look like crap" but you do not have to say something like, "You look beautiful" you can say something like that is a really nice necklace you have on today or, that jacket looks great on you so you are not lying and you are still being nice to them.

I do not think that Jakob was justified when he lied about the radio or not. It ended that every one didn't really like him in the end and his friends could not trust anything he said, and they all got sent to concentration camps. He saved his friend's life but the same thing he tried to save him killed his best friend. On the other had people started to look forward to life because the Russians were coming and they felt like they has something to live for again some reason to keep holding on at the worst of times. I think that at first he was justified because he was trying to save his friend and their weren't as amny suicides because of what he did but at the end it got way our of control and he had to keep telling lies to cover up the last lie he told so it was lie on top lie on top lie. Jakob may have saved some lives but a lot of other lives were destroyed because they all had hopes on something that wasn't even true. They were all let down because of something they thought was going to happen and had hope for, in a way that is worse then having any hopes at all.

I think that the story about the cloud and the gardener represents the war and something just out of reach and happiness. The sick princess represented all of the people who were suffering and the gardener is the hero. In the story no one could capture a cloud for the sick princess. That is what all the people in the war wanted. They were thinking nothing but bad was always to come it was hopeless and they were just going to give up because their was nothing to live for. The gardener gets a cloud that was made out of cotten balls. He tricked the sick little princess into believing everyhing was okay and that she would become better. That is what Jakon did with his radio, he tricked every one into thinking that everything was fine and it was getting better and they were all going to be okay.
Only our heros can give us our "cloud" that is the thing that we all look for and hope for. The thing that is just out of reach. The gardener is our hero and the princess is all of us.

I do believe that in some situations it could be alright to lie. But most of the time it can get you into sticky situations. But in the movie Jacob the liar, he lies about having a radio to give others hope and to make them happy! Which i think is a good reason to lie. But lying to get yourself out of something bad you did, is not acceptable.

Yes, I do think he is justified to lie in this situation. Because he was doing it to help the people he was lying to, not to help himself. But if he was to be caught in his lies, the consequences could be much worse. But I most likely would have done the same exact thing jacob did in this situation of lying about having the radio, to lift people up in times of sadness:(

I think that the gardener could represent a lot of things, but the thing that i think it most represents in the americans and the other allies coming to save the qhetto. I think that the sick princess is the people in the ghetto, who just need a little help to get better. Also i think that the cloud is a war to set all of the people free.

#1 I am one of those people that was taut that it is not good or right to lie. sometimes I could see a time where it may be alright to lie like if you keep someone from getting hurt or if it doesn't hurt anyone in the process of lying. So I think that well over half of the time you shouldn't lie, but those are the few exceptions to the rule.
That is what I think.

#2 I think that it is always wrong to lie but I think that maybe Jacob was justified because he was saving peoples lives, like he said since people had started hearing "news" the suicides had almost completely stopped. Besides he saved the boy who was going to steal the apples by lying and telling him he had a radio.
So I think that he made a choice that was right, at least I know I would have done it.

#3 My Ideas on the cloud metaphor in the story is, the cloud is like all peace and no things to worry about. Everything would be just if someone could get a cloud for the princess. I think that the gardener symbolizes the Russians defeating the Germans and peace being restored. Last I think that the princess herself represents that only an innocent little child could truly make all peace on earth because they would not be driven by the wrong reasons but by love and kindness, and not by greed or revenge. So that is what I think the little princess represents.

1. In Jakob der Lügner, Jakob lied that he had a radio to save his friends life. If he hadn't done this than Micsha would have died. I think it is okay to lie sometimes. It is not black and white, it is more into the gray. I think it is okay to lie when it will save someone's life. Look at it this way; if your friend is about to die would you lie to save them? I know I would lie. If you are in a situation like this and you lie to save someone's life than you did the right thing.

2. I don't think he was justified in telling his lie about the radio. I think it was permissible to tell that lie. He saved a lot of lives. When word got out there were no more suicides. When he gave new news the people in the getto were happier. He did manage to hurt some people in the end. Kwaltski commited suicide when he found out Jakob had no radio. Then, all of the people were depressed when they were getting moved to a concentration camp. I would have did the same thing as Jakob but, I would not have told Kwalski I didn't have a radio.

3. I think the cloud represents the hopes and dreams of the getto. I also represents the freedom they would get from the Russians. The sick prinsess represents the jews in the getto who would get the freedom. The young gardener is Jakob. Jakob brought hope to the getto. I think the cloud also represents the hope Jakob brought to the getto.
This is what I think of the three questions you asked us.

1. In the movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lies telling his friend that he has a radio because he knows where the Russans are. In this case, he does know where the Russans are but, be doesn't have a radio. Sometimes I think it is not okay to lie in any situation because it WRONG! I don't think it is okay to lie because after you admit that you lied something will go wrong. Like when Jacob tell his friend that he doesn't have a radio and his friend commits scuicide.

2. I don't think Jacob was justified about having a radio. I think it could be permissionable because he spread false hope and made people happy at the same time. He made so many people happy that there where no more scuicides in the ghetto until he told his friends that he doesn't have a radio and then two of his friends commited scuicide. If he didn't lie, his friends would wonder how he got such information and Jacob would tell them that he heard it at the police station. I would have never listened to the radio so I wouldn't get into such a mess and get my life ruind by one small lie.

3. I think the cloud represents either freedom or the russans because it is the cure for the princess. I think that the sick princess is the people in the Ghetto because they are very poor and alot of them are misurable. I think the gardener boy would be Jacob because he gives the Ghetto hope and something to dwell on. I also think this because Jacob makes the Ghetto happy.

in the movie jacob lied about a radio. is it ok to lie about stuff?
i think it is not ok to lie because it will stack up on you seventually and you will be lying unstoppably and you will have so many poeple asking you about the war. if you are in jacobs place. lying is wrong and if you are trying to save someone then dont lye just let them just jump off that cliff into the boiling pot of lava. its not going to hurt you its going to hurt the person doing the jumping. so if i were you dont lie and do not try getting yourself into positions that you have to lie.

i dont think it was a great idea because... well it saves people yes but would you sit there and work for people that just want to kill you. no that is more like a punishment to me. so i would just let him just run and let the guy put him out of his misery because i dont see anymeening of living if all you can do is work and work and watch people go suicide. and jump of cliffs.

the clouds represent. ok so the gardener represents jacob because he wants to help but he lied. the girl is the queen because she is sick in not knowing what she needs to know about the germans. and the old guy is the smart guy trying to help but he doesnt know what to get.

Unknown said...

its not the best to lie but if you really think that if you really think that you need to or just you have a good reasoning that you beleive in. And no one will get hurt or upset beacause of it then go a head and do what you think is right. But in the movie someone did die because of it so i would rather not tell lies now even if they're really little and simple.

i don't thing that Jakob should have even said anything about the radio, even if his best friend could have died. Because if he was really his friend he wouldn't have told him that lie. Because if one of my friends did that i would tell them something like "no just wait you can get potatoes all after this war just don't get them yet." And i would just try to convince them.

i think that the cloud represents getting out of that war and just finding better thinks and better possibilities. the gardener is Jakob's friend Mishe and maybe the princess is Rosa or Lina.

I don't think that it is okay to lie unless its like a lady comes up to you and asks you if she looks fat or ugly. You wouldn't just say, "Yeah your way fat and ugly!" You would say, "No, you look good." I would only lie if it were situations like that or if it was like life threatening or something like that. Otherwise, no I do not think that lying is okay.

I think that the situation that Jakob was in, he had the right to lie. He didn't lie before, but the guy didn't believe him. He was going to kill himself, but Jakob saved him by lying. So that is okay. He had good and bad consequences. First, he saves a guys life, but second, he loses some by suicide, and he has to keep lying about it. If he didn't lie, the guy would of died. If it were me, I would of done the same and lied, and hope that it wouldn't be as bad as Jakob.

You wanted us to name the cloud, so here is mine. I think the cloud represents hope, and I think that the princes represented the ghetto, and I think that the gardener would be Jakob. Thanks

1.I can see why Jacob lied. He wanted to save his friend. But I personally believe that lying is a bad thing and one should never lie. A lot of people lie out of pure desperation of saving someone or something. In any situation lying is bad and if you lie like Jacob did and keep building upon it that just makes it worse and I think he should gotten out of that lie sooner because eventually because of that lie his best friend committed suicide.
2. In that situation Jacob felt that he had no other way to save his friend. The good side of making that lie was that suicide rates were going down and everyone finally had hope. The downside is that he had to keep on lying to cover up that lie and his own friend eventually killed himself. I think he should have got out of that lie that he had a radio and just told everyone that the Russians are close and I think that would still give them a lot of hope and his friend wouldn't have killed himself.
3. In the story Jacob told I think he told the story to give her hope. I think that the princess in the story represented the little girl he was taking care of. The King was Jacob, the gardener was the Russians, and the clouds represented freedom. So when the Princess was sick that meant the little girl wanted freedom but all the King or Jacob could do was give her hope but when the gardener or the Russians came in he was finally able to give her what she truly wanted which was her freedom.

1. The movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lies that he has a radio keeps lying through out the movie. I think that it is okay sometimes to lie. If someone asks you if they are looking good but they kind of are not then you should not tell them that they look horrible like so it doesn't hurt anyone. But, other than that you shouldn't lie. Because it will carry on and hurt you later.

2. Jacob kind of did a little good about telling the lies. Maybe Jacob just wanted to see the people around him happy. Other than that there is no reason to get everyones hopes up. You would not be able to trust the person that made up a lie. After that it is just not good for the liar because you were trying to help your friends but really was a stupid idea. All your friends and people would not believe you. He should not have lied cause he had to keep covering those lies with other lies and it just keeps going.

3. The cloud would represent freedom from the Nazi's. The young gardner represented the Russians saving the Jews. The girl represented a Jewish girl who has no freedom. The gardener seemed like Jacob a little because Jacob wanted to protect her and keep her safe and so he found out a way to help her.

1. I believe in some place's it is ok to lie like those little ones. Like if you were asked by a girl if they looked good in an outfit you could just say sure but there are risks if some one tells that girl they didn't look good in it then they would come complain to you because told them they did but they didn't they would also hate you for a long time. That's why its ok to lie if you don't get caught

2. I think that it was a bad idea for him to lie about the radio. even if that person was gonna go get him self killed he could have used other reasons like don't you have other reasons to live for like your girl friend. Even if it did stop some suicides it would probably cause more when they all found out the truth. Like how his best friend killed him self. At the end when they were getting shipped out they all thought it was his fault to.

3. With the story of the sick princess if think the king represented jakob the sick princess represented his girl friend in the side story the gardener was the other man that asked her to marry him and the cloud was jakobs decision so jakob said yes and the man took her to America. That is what I thought the story was about.

Jakob lied in the movie many times, but it was for the good of other people. I believe that lying is most of the time bad, because it can raise false hopes (which i know firsthand how that feels) and no matter what happens, the truth will always come out. The only times that lying is good is when somebodies life is in danger and you have to lie to save them.

When Jakob lied to Mischa, he told him that he had a radio so that he wouldn't run off and get himself shot. Mischa said that he would rather get shot than starve, so i think that when Jakob told that lied he did it for the better good. I would have told the lie if it meant saving my friends life. i could imagine that life in the ghetto is lonely and having all the friends you can get is a good thing.

Jakob told the story of the sick princess to the little girl. He said how the king tried to cure her but it didn't work. So a gardener brought her a cloud and she got better. I think that the sick girl is the people in the ghetto and the cloud is hope and freedom that they need. I believe that the gardener represented the russians that would hopefully come save them.

i think that sometimes it is okay to lie if it is for a good cause. some examples are if someone asks you does this make me look fat. you shouldn't say yes you should lie and say it isn't my favorite. another example in Jakob the liar Jakob lied about having a radio. that is an example of a bad time to lie. i personally think that it is okay to lie if it is a life death situation.

i think that Jakob was not justified in his lying about the radio. he could have told his friend something else. Jakob could have told him that his girlfriend would miss him or something along those lines instead of the radio. and after he told him about the radio he should have told him that it was a lie and not gone along with it for as long as he did. he should not have lied.

the last question you asked was about the clouds and what you thought i think the clouds mean. i think that the clouds mean a freedom. like the people are trapped and the sick girl in the story are the Jews in the ghetto. and the clouds represent the medicine that the girl needs and the medicine that the Jews need is freedom and without it they will die. that's what i think the clouds represent.

In the movie Jacob the liar Jacob heard some news in the cops office and so he told one guy at the plave he works at and then he told another person. I think it is okay to lie some times but only if it is saving someones life or your own.
I dont think is was right for for jacob to lie because it gave to much people hope so they kept asking him for more news which he gave but it wasnt true. In the end lieing is the worst thing you can do.
I think that they represented freedom from the ghetto and Germans. And I also think that the princess represented the getto, or was the little girl that Jacob took care of. I also think that the gardener represented Jacob. So that is what I think about the 3 questions you asked us. MDL a#

1. In the movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lied about him having a radio to save his friends' life. The first question asks if it is okay to like in certain situations. I think that it is permissible to lie in certain situations because sometimes if you are in a life or death situation, you need to lie to get someone out of their death like in the movie. In other times, people should not lie because it just causes problems and one lie could lead to another and another and it could just go on and on.

2. I believe that Jakob was justified when he lied about having a radio because he was saving his friend from being shot by the Germans. I believe that it was permissible in his situation. It was good because it was saving a persons life. It was bad because everyone started hearing about it and they wanted to know what was going on with the Russians and Jakob didn't have an answer. I don't exactly know what I would have done. I would probably think too late and not know what to do.

3. In the third question, it asks about the clouds, the sick princess, and the young gardener and what they could possibly symbolize. I personally do not know what the cloud could represent. I have thought about it and I do not have an answer. But the sick princess symbolizes the young girl which I forgot her name and the young gardener probably represents Jakob because he makes her happy and makes her better.

In the movie Jakob der lugner, Jakob lies so that his friend won't go get shot. I believe that lieing is okay in certain situations, like if you are lieing to save someones life then I think that you should. Or, if you are lieing to a little kid like saying that Santa is real. But if you are just lieing to help yourself, then it is wrong.

I do not think that Jakob is justified in his lieing, because it just kept getting bigger, he could have just stopped. And it also ended up killing his best friend kowalski. So no, he is not justified in his lieing

I think that the cloud represented the Russians, because that was who they were looking to for saving. The princess represented the Jews, because they were stuck and could not help themselves. and lastly, i believe that the gardener represented Jakob, because he helped the Jews.

Janell said...

I think that it is bad to lie and sometimes good, because you don't want to just walk up to someone and go hey that shirt looks ugly and your face is ugly. It would be better to lie sometimes because you don't want you hurt peoples feelings. It is also not good because if you lie to much it can soon creep up on you and you can get in trouble or the other person can.

I think Jakob should of just stopped him and said what is more valuable your life or your hunger. So I don't think it was justified because I wouldn't say the lie I would either try to get sense into the guy or just let him go.

I thought what are the clouds for and I think they mean freedom and health in the Ghetto because that has got to mean something good if the farmer boy gave her the cloud. The farmer boy must have represented Jakob trying to save the Ghetto. The princess must have been the Ghetto and the people inside of the Ghetto wanting to be free.

Unknown said...

1. I think that it is okay to lie somtimes it just depends on what it is like if somone just killed somone then told you you mite not want to lie about it to the police if they ask you you should probably tell the truth or you can get into a lot of trouble to. On the other hand if somone tells you somthing personal about themselfs then also asks you not to tell anyone then you should probably keep it to yourself cause then they mite hate you and it could also hurt their feelings.

3. The clowd represents freedom i think the sick princess represents the girl jacob was watching and she is sick and wen she gets the cloud she is free from the war. The young gardinar boy rebresents the guy jacob saved from getting killed cause he made the little girl happy.

In the movie Jacob the Liar, Jacob lied about having a radio so that they could beleave what he herd on the other radio, and to save a freinds life. I say that it is okay to lie in certain matters. It help many people to gain hope and there were not as many deaths. i say that yes if you need to to save someone or to keep from hurting them then it is okay to lie.

After you asked if jacob had a good reason to come up with the lie. You know what i say, i say yes. The lie save peoples lives and did let the people have hope in being rescued. they didint know when they were coming but if they just held out then they would of been free. you shouldnt give up, because you never knkow when you would be free from it. it could be in years or that day, you never know. The lie save lots of people, it they held on for a longer time and more probly made it out than if the lie had never happend.

The story that jacob told was i think in compareasion to the life of the jews during WW2. With the princess as the people or jews, and the sickness was the nazies that took the jews freedom. the cloud was the americans and the other countries fighting the nazies, with the gardener was hope. hope would keep them alive and going till the cloud or the allys came, wich cured her of released to and gave her freedom from the sickness or nazies gettos and prizion camps.

I think the question that if lying is wrong is an unfair question. Because some people may look at a situation of a liar and think what they did was horrible, but no one stops to think why they lied they just know they did. So if I had to answer this question with a answer that made sense it would be yes and no, because there are times when someone lies to save their own skin and they have just lied selfishly. But when someone lies to help someone else they are in hey are in the right because they have lied to save selflessly.

Also asking to judge a lie is another unfair question with the same argument of we don't fully understand why they lied. But when Jacob lies about the radio and it is explained we can judge fairly and I think that he is wrong. Sure he lied to save his friends life but it lead to a huge series of lie after lie. But seeing how he couldn't see into the future I think he had the right intention but not the right means.

Now this question really stumped me. Chances are the clouds were "normal" Germany and the sick princess was the ghetto with the gardener being the Russians coming to help. I didn't really understand that whole part of the movie but I think this is about right

It is okay to lie sometimes like when it can save someone's life and it's not selfish. Like in the article when the son doesn't put the money in the mom's coffin it's so he can give it to charity, if he put it in the coffin it might be stolen or sit there and be used for nothing. One of the bad things to lie about is if you did something that can hurt somebody else or blame it on someone else. An example, you kill someone and blame it on your brother and he gets thrown in prison, that's bad.
Jakob was justified about lying about the radio. If he didn't lie then Mischa would have ran out to the potato train and stolen some good stuff and would be shot by the baddies, the Germans. But since he lied, Mischa didn't run out to get the good stuff and didn't get shot by the baddies. If I was in his situation I would have lied too. There were good and bad consequences of him lying, the good, the suicide numbers went down and it gave the people hope, the bad, he had to keep lying over and over and eventually told and the barber kid commited suicide. If he didn't lie Mischa would have been shot by the baddies.

I believe that lying is acceptable in some certain occasions or problems. There are times when we should lie and when we shouldn't, and we should know when and when not to lie. Like for example about how Jakob lied and said that he had a radio. It saved more lives but all the Jews would of went to the concentration camps and got killed any ways but it didn't really matter. Like in a life and death situations you would want to lie to protect your self, family, and others. Except if like your grampa or someone in your family were to die for ex. in the next 3 days you would want to tell the truth so he doesn't have to say something like this "when I get out of here do you guys want to come with me on a fishing trip" or something like that it would be a waist of time.
You would want to make memories sooner than later and more than less. That's what I believe in lying.

I know that it wasn't a great idea for Jakob to lie to and in the ghetto plus he wasn't justified or permissible and he shouldn't have lied. First he saves more suicidal Jews but he told his friend that he really didn't have a radio so he hanged him self the next morning. He only saved most of the people for a moment, a tick of a second; but he received his consequence. He saved a life but than lost a life so it evened out. Their are good consequences to lying but mostly bad. It wouldn't matter if he lied or not because they would at sometime sooner or later go to the concentration camps and die. Plus those people that were in the ghetto that were still alive or that Jakob saved or killed were a FRACTION a very small amount of the total percentage or people that got killed during the Holocaust so it did NOT matter if he lied or not. About 6 million were killed during the Holocaust. If i were Jakob I wouldn't lie any way it wouldn't effect what would of happened or the balance. Only about 200, 200 jews survived.

I believe that the clouds represented the Russians coming to save them, freedom, and peace. The sick princess to me was the ghetto and the gardener Jakob.
